Black Flower

Ever evolving emotional ethio-jazz in a call to dance through life’s chaos.

TH 25.09 20:30

The polymorphous jazz of this Belgian band is deeply emotional, but words can hardly capture it. This is music to experience with your whole being, so we figured a 90-minute concert was a good place to start. Slow down, get quiet, but don’t sit still. Jazz was, is, and always will be dance music first <3

Black Flower
Exploring the world through jazz, five-piece Black Flower crafts a serpentine mélange of rolling drums, shepherd’s flutes, psychedelic sequences, breathy melodies and blurred arrangements. Nathan Daems (saxophone, ney, kaval), Jon Birdsong (cornet, conch shells), Simon Segers (drums), Filip Vandebril (bass, bass VI), and Karel Cuelenaere (keys) debuted in 2014 with the album Abyssinia Afterlife on Zephyrus Records, earning praise from tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, The Gaslamp Killer, and Lefto Early Bird. Fast forward to January 2025, when Sdban Ultra Records released Black Flower's sixth full album 'Kinetic', showcasing their ever evolving signature blend of Ethio-jazz, dub, and afrobeat. Each groove, rhythm and pulse channels raw energy, embodying a philosophy of flowing with change rather than resisting it. When the mind feels stuck, rigid, or overwhelmed by obstacles, Kinetic serves as a reminder that the body’s motion can be the force to shatter those confines. To move is to adapt, evolve, and transform.
