Collectivity on Screen:
Multi-vocal Ethnography of the production process of a community based film project by artist Els Dietvorst

The process of production is a critical and inexperienced tool in the research of representation, which I investigate by offering ethnographic data in a performative and multi-vocal way of the film shoot of “The March, The Burden, The Desert, The Boredom, The Anger” by Els Dietvorst. This project offers an interesting case in the field of
collaborative filmmaking challenging stereotypical representations. She collaborates, discusses and works for about four years with a collective she named “The Swallows’ located in a marginalized area of Brussels. They presented street performances, video installations, juke-box stories and films.

My approach shifts the attention deliberately from analyses focusing on the end result, which might be a film, a documentary, as is classic in cultural, and film studies, towards a critical research on the context of interaction
in which this result is submerged. As such, it is my aim to add an investigative tool in the examination of the rich potentiality of visuals in the construction of the self, on the one hand, and the formation of sodalities through those media, on the other, presenting important challenges to critical studies of the image.

20h30 LECTURE MICHAEL TAUSSIG

Fort sollicité aux forums artistiques new-yorkais, toujours insaisissable, Michael Taussig, pour la première fois, vient à Bruxelles. Guide chevronné de la transgression,il nous fait découvrir les "visions de la terreur", inspiratrices de l'art avant et après 9/11. Attendez-vous à un feu d'artifice. L'homme a la réputation d'être un performer-orateur plein de talent: imprévisible, le flot des idées toujours à un poil de la chute libre.

Professeur ès Performance Studies (Columbia University), Taussig est aussi l'auteur de quelques classiques sur la relation entre les formes contemporaines de l'art, la magie, le capitalisme et la science. Le 12 mai, au Beursschouwburg, sa conférence sera précédée d'un court documentaire et – qui sait? – suivie d'un entretien avec Jérôme Bel.

Un programme de Transmedia (Hogeschool Sint-Lukas Brussel), volet de l'enquête sur les arts, "An Anthropology of World-Mapping", réalisée en collaboration avec le département Sociale en Culturele Antropologie, KUL.
